Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Home of the mountain gorilla
About this destination
An ancient UNESCO rainforest sheltering nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas.
Bwindi is one of Africa's oldest and most biologically diverse forests โ a 25,000-year-old tangle of vines, ferns and 200-foot mahoganies. It shelters 459 mountain gorillas across four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
Trekking here is unscripted and physical. You'll spend up to eight hours in the forest with armed rangers and Batwa trackers, then one transformative hour in the presence of a habituated family.
Beyond the gorillas: 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, the Batwa Trail cultural experience, and waterfall walks through the Mubwindi swamp.
