Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve
Uganda's forgotten Karamoja savannah
About this destination
A vast 2,788 km² savannah in eastern Karamoja — home to Fox's Weaver, Uganda's only endemic bird.
Pian Upe is Uganda's second-largest protected area after Murchison, yet receives only a handful of visitors each year. The grasslands beneath Mt Kadam and Mt Napak hold roan antelope, eland, oribi, leopard, cheetah and the Common Ostrich.
Birders make the pilgrimage for Fox's Weaver — Uganda's only true endemic — alongside Stone Partridge, Hartlaub's Bustard and Karamoja Apalis.
