Mabamba Bay Wetland
The shoebill's papyrus stronghold
About this destination
A Ramsar-listed wetland on Lake Victoria's edge — the most reliable place in Africa to find the prehistoric shoebill stork.
Mabamba's papyrus channels run for 2,400 hectares along the northern shore of Lake Victoria, less than an hour from Entebbe. A dawn paddle in a wooden canoe through narrow waterways gives birders a near-certain encounter with the legendary shoebill — the 1.4 m grey 'dinosaur bird' that hunts lungfish in motionless silence.
Beyond the shoebill, Mabamba records over 300 species: African pygmy goose, papyrus gonolek, lesser jacana, blue-breasted bee-eater and more.
