The First Gorilla Encounter

The Food
Try a 'Rolex.' No, it's not a watch—it's a warm chapati wrapped around a spiced omelet with fresh veggies. You'll find them everywhere in Uganda, and they're the best breakfast you'll ever have. Also, don't leave without tasting 'matoke' (steamed green bananas)—it's a Ugandan staple and it's delicious.
The Weather
The gorillas don't care about your hair. Bring a light rain jacket—Bwindi's mist is as famous as its gorillas. And remember: the sun rises and sets quickly in East Africa, so don't miss those golden hours. A 6 AM start is worth the glow.
The Culture
When a Ugandan says "You are most welcome," they mean it. Greet with a smile and a handshake; it opens more doors than you'd think. In Rwanda, a simple "Muraho" (hello) goes a long way. In Uganda, say "Oli otya?" (How are you?)—and watch how people's faces light up.
The Tech
Uganda runs on MTN and Airtel. You'll be able to buy a local SIM card with data at the airport for less than $10. WhatsApp is used by everyone—it's how you'll stay in touch with your guide. And yes, there's Wi-Fi at most lodges, but it's slow and beautiful. Disconnect a little. Trust us.
