Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Tracking white rhino on foot
About this destination
Uganda's only place to encounter wild southern white rhinos — on foot, with armed rangers, on the road to Murchison Falls.
Set on 70 km² of grassland and woodland between Kampala and Murchison Falls, Ziwa is the reintroduction project bringing rhinos back to Uganda after their extinction in the 1980s. The sanctuary now protects more than 30 southern white rhinos, all named, tracked and monitored 24 hours a day.
A guided tracking walk gets you within 7 metres of these grazing giants — a humbling, silent encounter that pairs naturally with a Murchison Falls itinerary.
Add a shoebill walk in the swamps, a canoe ride on the Lugogo wetland, or an overnight at Amuka Lodge inside the sanctuary.
