Laikipia Plateau
Conservation's bold frontier
About this destination
9,500 km² of private conservancies and community ranches — Kenya's stronghold for rhino, wild dog and Grevy's zebra.
Laikipia holds the second-largest population of elephants in Kenya, the largest population of black and white rhino, and 50% of all African wild dogs. Yet it has no national park — the entire ecosystem is conserved by private and community landowners.
Each conservancy has its own character: Lewa for rhino and Grevy's zebra, Ol Pejeta for the last two northern white rhinos, Borana for walking and fly camping, Loisaba for star beds under the Milky Way.
