Samburu National Reserve
The Special Five of the north
About this destination
Semi-arid scrubland along the Ewaso Ng'iro river — home to species seen nowhere else in Kenya.
Samburu's signature draw is the Special Five: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and the gerenuk antelope. The Ewaso Ng'iro, fed by the Aberdares, is a green ribbon of doum palms and acacias through otherwise arid country.
The Samburu people — pastoralist cousins of the Maasai — share the conservancies. Stay at Sasaab or Saruni Samburu for the most editorial lodge experiences.
