Ngorongoro Crater
Africa in miniature
About this destination
The world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera — 260 km² holding 25,000 large mammals including all the Big Five.
The crater floor is a self-contained ecosystem 600 metres below the rim: alkaline Lake Magadi pink with flamingos, Lerai acacia forest, the Munge River and open grasslands. Black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo and the elusive leopard are all here in 100 km² of viewing.
Stay on the crater rim — &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge or The Highlands — for descents at first light before the day-trippers arrive.
