Volcanoes National Park
Dian Fossey's mountain sanctuary
About this destination
Five volcanoes, twelve habituated gorilla families, and the world's most polished gorilla trek.
Volcanoes β known locally as Parc National des Volcans β protects the Rwandan slopes of the Virunga Massif. Trekking here is short by Bwindi standards and famously well-organised: smaller, healthier groups, well-maintained trails, and luxury lodges within sight of the cones.
Twelve habituated families are tracked daily. The Dian Fossey Karisoke research site sits high on Mt Bisoke, reachable on a moving half-day hike.
Add golden monkey tracking in the bamboo zone, summit Mt Bisoke for its crater lake, or visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
