Akagera National Park
Rwanda's Big Five savannah
About this destination
A conservation triumph — lion and rhino reintroduced, the Big Five complete, and one of Africa's largest protected wetlands.
Akagera was nearly lost after Rwanda's genocide. Today, under African Parks management, it's a complete Big Five reserve. Lions returned in 2015; black rhino in 2017; eastern black rhinos in 2019.
The park's eastern half is a chain of papyrus-fringed lakes — boat cruises on Lake Ihema bring you alongside hippo pods, crocs and shoebill stork.
Stay at Magashi Camp on Lake Rwanyakazinga or Ruzizi Tented Lodge, the park's community-run gem.
