6 Days Mount Elgon Hiking

6 Days
Uganda

The Package

A six-day expedition up Mount Elgon's Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) โ€” the world's largest caldera, ancient caves, waterfalls and moorlands.

Six days walking into the body of an extinct volcano. Mount Elgon holds the largest caldera on the planet, and from Wagagai Peak (4,321 m) the rim opens onto Kenya in one long, slow breath. Expect bamboo forest at dawn, moorland silver under afternoon mist, and the three-tier rush of Sipi Falls as the reward at the end.

Day 1 โ€” Drive east from Kampala past Mabira Forest and Mbale to the mountain's foothills. Overnight at Rose's Last Chance community camp.

Day 2 โ€” Up from Budadiri into the cloud forest: 8 km, 8 hours of climbing through montane and bamboo zones to Sasa River Camp (2,900 m), where the air turns clean and cold.

Day 3 โ€” Higher still โ€” bamboo gives way to heath and moorland, lobelias standing like sentinels, the trail emptying into Mude Camp (3,500 m).

Day 4 โ€” Summit day. Wagagai Peak at 4,321 m, the caldera spread beneath you, the long view east into Kenya. Back down to Mude for one more night under the stars.

Day 5 โ€” Descend to Budadiri and transfer up to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa โ€” three waterfalls falling in sequence down a basalt cliff. Overnight at Sipi River Lodge.

Day 6 โ€” Roll back west to Kampala via Mbale and Jinja, the legs tired and the mind quiet.

Price: $1,200 โ€“ $4,500 per person depending on group size and lodging tier.
